Josh Nielsen, LMHCA

About Me

I hold my Associate License in Mental Health Counseling for the State of Washington (LMHCA), and am a Qualified Mental Health Associate in Oregon (QMHA). Since 2023, I have provided compassionate mental health services as a counselor/therapist in community mental health, as well a faith-based counseling organization, both in Washington State.

I hold my Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Wisconsin at Stout, which I earned in 2020. (Rehabilitation counseling involves workplace injury, workers’ compensation, disability, accommodations, working with elderly populations, and much more.) I worked as Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for three years before I found my true calling for the counseling aspect of that profession. I then fully transitioned into mental health counseling, and have worked as a counselor in both public and private organizations, in Oregon and Washington. I absolutely love helping people achieve the goals that are meaningful to them, as their relationships (family, friendships, romance) improve.

I hold my undergraduate degree in English Literature from Portland State University, which I earned in 2010. I speak some Spanish, having studied the language abroad in Costa Rica and Spain.

Approaches

I believe in positive, permanent change. I have been a client in therapy for several years, and have experienced this positive change personally.

I am open to many counseling approaches, but primarily utilize Rogerian, strengths-based, person-centered therapy. My friend once said, “It always feels like Josh is on your side.” Max’s was a kind compliment, and it describes my approach to providing therapy: client-centered, holistic, and supportive. One could also call it: Calm, Caring Compassion.

My approach to counseling is wholistic and person-centered. Being a client signifies strength, courage and true desire to achieve inner change. My role includes deeply listening to and hearing the client; providing alternate perspectives; gently challenging; and guiding the client towards achieving the goals which he/she creates. I have been told that I am easy to work with, and am a good listener. I am also a Christian, who loves reading and studying the Bible with clients, if they so choose to. I love working with all individuals, whether faith-based or not!
